Electric Reliability Under Deep Decarbonization in New England

This study evaluates New England’s electricity sector reliability needs under deep decarbonization by midcentury and assesses emerging innovations that could support the region in achieving economy-wide “net zero” emissions. We conducted detailed electricity capacity expansion and reliability modeling for two economy-wide emissions reductions pathways. This modeling identified the optimal generation portfolio and its operations given the unique constraints of New England’s energy system. We also identified complementary innovation priorities for the region based on the region’s energy requirements and local innovation capabilities. This study was conducted in collaboration between E3 and EFI, and funded by Calpine Corporation.
