“Conference of the Parties” 26 – NECA Edition

While the COVID-19 pandemic may have forced the 26th session of the United Nations Conference of the Parties to be postponed, NECA isn’t letting that stop us from continuing the conversation on how to limit global carbon emissions. Join us for a fast-paced, highly interactive workshop and tabletop exercise, using the MIT-built system dynamics "flight simulator" En-ROADS. This tool is an incredibly user-friendly way to help people - including global, national and regional climate change policy negotiators - understand the investment and policy levers available to the world to slow global warming. Participants at the corporate sustainability conference GreenBiz 2020 recently rated the workshop the best session of the conference.

In this workshop, participants propose climate solutions such as energy efficiency, carbon pricing, fossil fuel taxes, reducing deforestation, and carbon dioxide removal. We then test these approaches using En-ROADS so that participants can see the impact on global temperature and other factors.

Joining us will be HSBC Bank's VP of Sustainability Andrew Greenspan, who has utilized the flight simulator in discussions about risk and corporate sustainability strategy in his own work.

En-ROADS, co-designed by MIT and the non-profit Climate Interactive, runs on an ordinary laptop in a fraction of a second, offers an intuitive interface, and is carefully grounded in thirty years of the best available science. The resulting experience is hopeful, scientifically-grounded, action-oriented, and eye-opening. As the VP of Global Sustainability at Pepsico recently remarked, "En-ROADS lit my brain on fire."

A wide range of people have used En-ROADS, including science educator Bill Nye, members of the U.S. Congress, Governor Jay Inslee of Washington, the Hewlett Foundation, local community groups, the UN Secretary-General’s Office, university professors around the world, community groups around the world, the Energy Transition Forum in London, the U.S. Climate Action Network, and many others.

You can find out more about the tool at www.climateinteractive.org. A recent article in Fast Company described the tool, and another in Bloomberg Green.
